Shy Freya and the Lost favourite acorn

Freya is so shy that she hides from everyone, until a friend needs help.

Freya the frog was very, very shy. When anyone said hello, Freya hid behind a rock. ‘Maybe they won’t notice me,’ she whispered.

One windy day, Zane the zebra came by. Zane was sniffling. ‘I’ve lost my favourite acorn,’ said Zane. ‘It blew away, and I can’t find it anywhere.’

Freya peeked out. She wanted to help, but her voice felt tiny. ‘I... I... ‘ she began. But the words were too small to hear.

Then Freya saw something shiny high up on a branch. It was the favourite acorn! Freya was small and quick, so she climbed up, up, up, and gently plucked it down.

Freya tiptoed over to Zane and held out the favourite acorn. ‘Oh!’ said Zane. ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you!’ Zane gave Freya the biggest hug.

‘Would you like to be friends?’ asked Zane. Freya took a tiny breath. ‘Yes,’ she said. It was the loudest yes she had ever said.

The little lesson

Being brave enough to help someone is the first step to making a friend.

Let’s talk about it

  • Is it hard to say hello to someone new? What helps?
  • How did Freya help Zane?
