Squawk! Juno’s Pirate Secret
Pip the parrot repeats everything he hears, including the secret surprise party!
It was nearly Captain Tessa’s birthday, and Juno had a secret plan. ‘We’ll give the Captain a golden telescope!’ she whispered. ‘But nobody must say a word.’ Pip the parrot nodded very seriously.
But Pip was a parrot, and parrots repeat everything. When Tessa walked by, Pip said, ‘SECRET! SECRET! A golden telescope!’ Juno jumped up. ‘Er, nothing!’ she said. ‘It’s just Pip being silly.’
Tessa raised an eyebrow. ‘A secret?’ she said. ‘What secret?’ Pip opened his beak. Juno quickly stuffed a cracker in it. Pip said, ‘Mmph! Mmph!’ which was the nearest he could get.
All week, Juno had to guard the surprise. She hid it behind the barrels. She kept Pip busy with crackers and games. Pip nearly told again three times. Once, Pip even began to sing the whole plan.
On the big day, Tessa stepped onto the deck, and everyone jumped up. ‘SURPRISE!’ they shouted. Tessa looked so astonished. And then Pip flapped up and squawked, ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY!’ before anyone else could.
Tessa laughed so much that her hat fell off. ‘I knew there was a secret,’ she said, ‘but I didn’t know it would be such a good one.’ Juno gave Tessa a golden telescope, and Pip got the biggest cracker.
