Stone Soup for Everyone, Says Lily
Lily makes soup from a stone, and the whole village adds one thing at a time.
Lily the fox arrived in a village on a cold evening, very hungry. The people shut their doors. ‘We have nothing to spare,’ they said. Lily sat in the square, thinking.
Then Lily lit a fire and filled a big pot with water. She dropped in a smooth round stone. ‘I’m making stone soup,’ she announced. ‘It’s magic. It only needs a little something extra.’
Zeke the puppy peeked out. ‘Stone soup?’ he said. ‘I have some carrots.’ Into the pot they went. Then Rufus the raccoon brought herbs. Jonah the tiger brought a bag of rice.
The soup bubbled and smelled wonderful. Soon the whole village gathered round with bowls and spoons. Everyone shared, and there was plenty for all.
‘Best soup I ever had,’ said Jonah. Lily smiled and fished out the stone. ‘The magic wasn’t in the stone,’ she said. ‘It was in sharing.’ And the village was never unfriendly again.
