Stone Soup for Everyone, Says Stan

Stan makes soup from a stone, and the whole village adds one thing at a time.

Stan the cow arrived in a village on a cold evening, very hungry. The people shut their doors. β€˜We have nothing to spare,’ they said. Stan sat in the square, thinking.

Then Stan lit a fire and filled a big pot with water. He dropped in a smooth round stone. β€˜I’m making stone soup,’ he announced. β€˜It’s magic. It only needs a little something extra.’

Kofi the kitten peeked out. β€˜Stone soup?’ he said. β€˜I have some cabbage.’ Into the pot they went. Then Hana the hedgehog brought herbs. Mateo the elephant brought a bag of rice.

The soup bubbled and smelled wonderful. Soon the whole village gathered round with bowls and spoons. Everyone shared, and there was plenty for all.

β€˜Best soup I ever had,’ said Mateo. Stan smiled and fished out the stone. β€˜The magic wasn’t in the stone,’ he said. β€˜It was in sharing.’ And the village was never unfriendly again.
