The Hiccupping giraffe
Ravi has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Ravi the giraffe woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Ravi. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them blew all the leaves off the tree. Another made Alba the turtle bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Ravi. ‘I need to stop!’
Alba had an idea. ‘Try getting a big scare!’ So Ravi tried. He did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at him.
Priya the panda had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Priya hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Ravi wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all he said.
The friends sat down, tired. Alba was so tired that she began to hum. Priya joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Ravi watched and began to giggle.
Ravi laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Ravi waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Priya. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
