The Monster Under Gus’s Bed
Gus finds a monster under the bed. It turns out to be even more scared than he is.
At bedtime, Gus heard a noise. Snuffle, snuffle, rustle. It was coming from under the bed. Gus pulled the covers to his chin. ‘Who’s there?’ he whispered.
A pair of big yellow eyes peeked out. Then a fluffy paw. It was Pippa the dragon. ‘Please don’t be cross,’ squeaked Pippa. ‘I’m scared of the dark.’ Gus blinked.
Gus was no longer afraid. ‘You can come out,’ he said kindly. Pippa crawled out, trembling. Gus gave her a biscuit. She said, ‘Thank you. You’re nice.’
They sat together on the bed, sharing the blanket. They talked about everything. Pippa said, ‘I live under beds because they’re cosy.’ Gus laughed. ‘You can visit whenever you like.’
When Gus yawned, Pippa tiptoed back under the bed. ‘Goodnight,’ whispered Pippa. ‘Goodnight,’ said Gus. And both of them slept soundly.
