The Soup of Dot
Dot makes soup from a stone, and the whole village adds one thing at a time.
Dot the deer arrived in a village on a cold evening, very hungry. The people shut their doors. ‘We have nothing to spare,’ they said. Dot sat in the square, thinking.
Then Dot lit a fire and filled a big pot with water. She dropped in a smooth round stone. ‘I’m making stone soup,’ she announced. ‘It’s magic. It only needs a little something extra.’
Daisy the duck peeked out. ‘Stone soup?’ she said. ‘I have some carrots.’ Into the pot they went. Then Lena the little bird brought herbs. Gia the giraffe brought a bag of rice.
The soup bubbled and smelled wonderful. Soon the whole village gathered round with bowls and spoons. Everyone shared, and there was plenty for all.
‘Best soup I ever had,’ said Gia. Dot smiled and fished out the stone. ‘The magic wasn’t in the stone,’ she said. ‘It was in sharing.’ And the village was never unfriendly again.
