The Spooky House on Jess’s Street
Jess and friends dare each other to look inside the spooky house. What they find is a surprise.
At the end of the street stood a tall, dark house with creaky shutters and a crooked door. Everyone said it was haunted. One windy evening, Willow dared Jess to knock.
Jess gulped, but nodded. They crept up the path, step by step. The gate squeaked. A shutter banged. Something moved behind the curtain. They held hands tightly.
Jess knocked. The door creaked slowly open. A tall shadow appeared. ‘Hello?’ it said. They screamed! But it was only Dot the deer, holding a plate of warm buns.
‘Don’t be frightened,’ said Dot. ‘Come in, come in.’ Inside it was warm and bright. They met a quiet baker making giant cakes. ‘We thought you were a ghost!’ laughed Willow. ‘I get that a lot,’ said Dot.
They stayed for hours, eating warm buns and hearing stories. When they left, Jess said, ‘Thank you for having us.’ ‘Come back anytime,’ said Dot. And the house never seemed spooky again.
The little lesson
Don’t judge a place or person by looks.
Let’s talk about it
- What did they expect to find?
- What did they actually find?
