Where Do Rainbows Come From, Sana?

Sana wonders where rainbows come from, and discovers how to make one at home.

After the rain, a rainbow arced across the sky. ‘Where do rainbows come from?’ Sana asked Opal the puppy. Opal didn’t know. So Sana decided to find out.

Sana read that rainbows happen when sunlight shines through raindrops. The light bends and splits into seven colours. ‘I could do that,’ Sana thought, ‘at home!’

Sana stood in the sunlight with a crystal. She held it up, and tilted it. Suddenly, the wall lit up with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet! ‘A rainbow!’ Sana cried.

Opal tried to catch the colours with her paws, but they slipped away. They laughed, and danced in the little rainbow until the sun slid behind a cloud.

That evening, Sana drew a picture of the rainbow in a notebook. ‘Now I know,’ she wrote. ‘Light has all the colours inside it.’ And Sana smiled, feeling like a real scientist.
