Xena’s Bad Hair Day
Xena’s hair will not lie flat. Nothing works! What will happen at school photo day?
It was school photo day, and Xena woke up to find that her hair was sticking up like a bird’s nest. There were curls. There were spikes. There was even a tuft that pointed at the ceiling.
Xena tried to flatten it with a big bucket of water. But the hair just got soaked from head to toe. ‘Oh no,’ she groaned. ‘I can’t go to school like this!’ She tried again. And again.
By the time Xena gave up, her hair was wilder than ever. She went to school with her hood pulled right down. But at the school gate, Eli the elephant spotted her.
‘Why are you wearing your hood?’ asked Eli. Xena sighed and pulled it down. Everyone gasped. Then Eli grinned. ‘That’s AMAZING! It looks like a lion’s mane! Can I touch it?’
Soon, a crowd gathered. Alba the mouse said, ‘It looks like a firework!’ Someone else said it looked like a sunflower. Xena began to smile. She felt a bit like a celebrity.
Photo time came. The photographer sat everyone in rows. ‘Smile!’ She flashed. And in the photo, Xena sat in the middle with a huge grin, her hair standing up like a crown.
Everyone loved the photo. Some of the other children tried to copy Xena’s hairstyle the next day. And Xena learned something: sometimes the thing you think is a problem is just a different kind of wonderful.
