Ben’s Parrot Who Told Secrets
Pip the parrot repeats everything he hears, including the secret surprise party!
It was nearly Captain Bruno’s birthday, and Ben had a secret plan. ‘We’ll give the Captain a hat with a feather!’ he whispered. ‘But nobody must say a word.’ Pip the parrot nodded very seriously.
But Pip was a parrot, and parrots repeat everything. When Bruno walked by, Pip said, ‘SECRET! SECRET! A hat with a feather!’ Ben jumped up. ‘Er, nothing!’ he said. ‘It’s just Pip being silly.’
Bruno raised an eyebrow. ‘A secret?’ he said. ‘What secret?’ Pip opened his beak. Ben quickly stuffed a cracker in it. Pip said, ‘Mmph! Mmph!’ which was the nearest he could get.
All week, Ben had to guard the surprise. He hid it under the sail. He kept Pip busy with crackers and games. Pip nearly told again three times. Once, Pip even began to sing the whole plan.
On the big day, Bruno stepped onto the deck, and everyone jumped up. ‘SURPRISE!’ they shouted. Bruno looked so astonished. And then Pip flapped up and squawked, ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY!’ before anyone else could.
Bruno laughed so much that his hat fell off. ‘I knew there was a secret,’ he said, ‘but I didn’t know it would be such a good one.’ Ben gave Bruno a hat with a feather, and Pip got the biggest cracker.
