Squawk! Wally’s Pirate Secret
Rosie the parrot repeats everything he hears, including the secret surprise party!
It was nearly Captain Idris’s birthday, and Wally had a secret plan. ‘We’ll give the Captain a giant chocolate cake!’ he whispered. ‘But nobody must say a word.’ Rosie the parrot nodded very seriously.
But Rosie was a parrot, and parrots repeat everything. When Idris walked by, Rosie said, ‘SECRET! SECRET! A giant chocolate cake!’ Wally jumped up. ‘Er, nothing!’ he said. ‘It’s just Rosie being silly.’
Idris raised an eyebrow. ‘A secret?’ he said. ‘What secret?’ Rosie opened her beak. Wally quickly stuffed a cracker in it. Rosie said, ‘Mmph! Mmph!’ which was the nearest she could get.
All week, Wally had to guard the surprise. He hid it behind the barrels. He kept Rosie busy with crackers and games. Rosie nearly told again three times. Once, Rosie even began to sing the whole plan.
On the big day, Idris stepped onto the deck, and everyone jumped up. ‘SURPRISE!’ they shouted. Idris looked so astonished. And then Rosie flapped up and squawked, ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY!’ before anyone else could.
Idris laughed so much that his hat fell off. ‘I knew there was a secret,’ he said, ‘but I didn’t know it would be such a good one.’ Wally gave Idris a giant chocolate cake, and Rosie got the biggest cracker.
