Beth tucked up in bed and closed her eyes. The room went quiet. Suddenly Beth felt a gentle tug, as if someone were pulling a string. When she opened her eyes, she was standing in a garden.
It was the strangest, loveliest garden. The grass glowed softly. The trees were silver. And all around grew flowers of every colour, each one with a tiny light inside, like a sleepy lantern.
‘Welcome to the Dream Garden,’ said Rani the bear, who looked after it. ‘Every flower holds a dream. You can choose one to take home with you. But choose carefully!’
Beth walked between the flowers. A pink one hummed a soft tune. A tall yellow one smelled like warm bread. Stan the snail peeked out from a leaf and said, ‘Try the pink one!’
Beth bent down and touched the petals of the pink flower. It opened, as softly as a sigh. Inside, a little picture danced: Beth was riding on the back of a friendly whale.
‘That’s the one,’ whispered Beth. Rani smiled and plucked the flower. She tucked it carefully into Beth’s hands. ‘Hold on tight,’ said Rani. ‘It will bloom as you sleep.’
The garden faded softly, like mist. Beth sank down into a cloud of sleepiness. And the pink flower bloomed into the very best dream. Beth slept until the sun came up.
