Pip Bakes a Birthday Cake
Pip bakes a cake for Poppy’s birthday. It doesn’t turn out as planned, but it tastes wonderful.
It was Poppy’s birthday tomorrow, and Pip wanted to make a special surprise. He decided to bake a lemon cake. Theo the turtle gave him a recipe.
Pip mixed butter, sugar, eggs and flour. He spooned the batter into a tin and popped it in the oven. Then he waited. And waited. It smelled so good!
But when Pip took out the cake, it had leaned like a tower. Pip’s heart sank too. ‘Oh no,’ he said. ‘It’s a mess.’ Theo smiled. ‘Let’s decorate it.’
They covered it with thick icing, sprinkles and candles. It still leaned a bit, but it looked cheerful. Pip carried it carefully to Poppy’s party.
‘SURPRISE!’ Poppy gasped. ‘A cake! For me?’ Pip blushed. ‘It’s not perfect,’ he said. Poppy said, ‘It’s the best cake in the world, because you made it.’ Everyone sang, and ate every last crumb.
