The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Cleo the bear yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the pink clouds,’ whispered Cleo. She stepped out into the garden in her nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Mei, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the sparkly fireflies,’ whispered Cleo. She walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the round, white moon,’ whispered Cleo. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Cleo smiled back. Her eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Cleo walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Mei tucked the blanket up to Cleo’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Cleo,’ said Mei.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Cleo. She closed her eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
- What do you see out of your window at night?
