Daisy’s Strange Parcel
A parcel arrives with no name and no address, and a faint noise inside.
On Tuesday afternoon, there was a knock at the door. No one was there. But on the doorstep sat a brown paper parcel tied up with string. It had no name and no address.
Daisy picked it up. It was surprisingly light. And as she shook it very gently, something went tinkle, tinkle. ‘Hmm,’ said Daisy. ‘We’ll need the detective kit.’
Daisy called Leo the piglet and Percy the zebra. Together they examined the parcel. ‘There’s a stamp showing a snowy mountain,’ said Leo. ‘That’s a clue,’ said Daisy. ‘Perhaps it came from the mountain post office.’
They set off to the mountain post office. Daisy asked the people there: ‘Did anyone send a parcel?’ Everyone shook their heads. But the kind old lady at the counter thought for a moment. ‘I think I know that handwriting.’
She pointed to a tiny letter in the corner of the paper, almost invisible. ‘See? That’s a special curly G. It’s from someone very close to you.’ Daisy’s heart skipped a beat.
They hurried home. Daisy sat down and slowly pulled the string. The paper unwrapped. Inside lay a pot of honey and a map to find more. Daisy read the note. A big smile spread across her face.
It was a present from someone far away who loved her, and had wanted it to be a surprise. Daisy wrote a thank-you letter that very night. And she mailed a parcel back, wrapped in brown paper, with no name at all.
The little lesson
Sometimes the people who love us send surprises when we least expect them.
Let’s talk about it
- What would you hope was inside?
- Who do you send surprises to?
