Enzo tucked up in bed and closed his eyes. The room went quiet. Suddenly Enzo felt a gentle tug, as if someone were pulling a string. When he opened his eyes, he was standing in a garden.
It was the strangest, loveliest garden. The grass glowed softly. The trees were silver. And all around grew flowers of every colour, each one with a tiny light inside, like a sleepy lantern.
‘Welcome to the Dream Garden,’ said Poppy the elephant, who looked after it. ‘Every flower holds a dream. You can choose one to take home with you. But choose carefully!’
Enzo walked between the flowers. A blue one hummed a soft tune. A tall yellow one smelled like warm bread. Lola the little bird peeked out from a leaf and said, ‘Try the blue one!’
Enzo bent down and touched the petals of the blue flower. It opened, as softly as a sigh. Inside, a little picture danced: Enzo was flying with a flock of golden birds.
‘That’s the one,’ whispered Enzo. Poppy smiled and plucked the flower. He tucked it carefully into Enzo’s hands. ‘Hold on tight,’ said Poppy. ‘It will bloom as you sleep.’
The garden faded softly, like mist. Enzo sank down into a cloud of sleepiness. And the blue flower bloomed into the very best dream. Enzo slept until the sun came up.
