The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Wren the puppy yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the golden sun,’ whispered Wren. She stepped out into the garden in her nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Percy, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the shiny pond,’ whispered Wren. She walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the sleepy moon,’ whispered Wren. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Wren smiled back. Her eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Wren walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Percy tucked the blanket up to Wren’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Wren,’ said Percy.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Wren. She closed her eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
- What do you see out of your window at night?
