The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Dylan the duck yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the old gate,’ whispered Dylan. He stepped out into the garden in his nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Esme, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the little frogs,’ whispered Dylan. He walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the big yellow moon,’ whispered Dylan. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Dylan smiled back. His eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Dylan walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Esme tucked the blanket up to Dylan’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Dylan,’ said Esme.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Dylan. He closed his eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
- What do you see out of your window at night?
