The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Kira the kitten yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the glowing lantern,’ whispered Kira. She stepped out into the garden in her nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Nico, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the blinking stars,’ whispered Kira. She walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the dreamy moon,’ whispered Kira. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Kira smiled back. Her eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Kira walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Nico tucked the blanket up to Kira’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Kira,’ said Nico.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Kira. She closed her eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
- What do you see out of your window at night?
