Ella tucked up in bed and closed her eyes. The room went quiet. Suddenly Ella felt a gentle tug, as if someone were pulling a string. When she opened her eyes, she was standing in a garden.
It was the strangest, loveliest garden. The grass glowed softly. The trees were silver. And all around grew flowers of every colour, each one with a tiny light inside, like a sleepy lantern.
‘Welcome to the Dream Garden,’ said Pip the pony, who looked after it. ‘Every flower holds a dream. You can choose one to take home with you. But choose carefully!’
Ella walked between the flowers. A silver one hummed a soft tune. A tall yellow one smelled like warm bread. Dani the duck peeked out from a leaf and said, ‘Try the silver one!’
Ella bent down and touched the petals of the silver flower. It opened, as softly as a sigh. Inside, a little picture danced: Ella was sailing a paper boat across a river of stars.
‘That’s the one,’ whispered Ella. Pip smiled and plucked the flower. She tucked it carefully into Ella’s hands. ‘Hold on tight,’ said Pip. ‘It will bloom as you sleep.’
The garden faded softly, like mist. Ella sank down into a cloud of sleepiness. And the silver flower bloomed into the very best dream. Ella slept until the sun came up.
The little lesson
Good dreams grow from kind thoughts, and we can choose which ones to water.
Let’s talk about it
- Which flower would you open?
