The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Pip the koala yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the little birds,’ whispered Pip. He stepped out into the garden in his nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Cleo, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the teddy bear,’ whispered Pip. He walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the night-time moon,’ whispered Pip. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Pip smiled back. His eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Pip walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Cleo tucked the blanket up to Pip’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Pip,’ said Cleo.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Pip. He closed his eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
- What do you see out of your window at night?
