The Soup of Kofi
Kofi makes soup from a stone, and the whole village adds one thing at a time.
Kofi the kitten arrived in a village on a cold evening, very hungry. The people shut their doors. ‘We have nothing to spare,’ they said. Kofi sat in the square, thinking.
Then Kofi lit a fire and filled a big pot with water. He dropped in a smooth round stone. ‘I’m making stone soup,’ he announced. ‘It’s magic. It only needs a little something extra.’
Bear the puppy peeked out. ‘Stone soup?’ he said. ‘I have some peas.’ Into the pot they went. Then Manu the mouse brought herbs. Luca the lion brought a bag of rice.
The soup bubbled and smelled wonderful. Soon the whole village gathered round with bowls and spoons. Everyone shared, and there was plenty for all.
‘Best soup I ever had,’ said Luca. Kofi smiled and fished out the stone. ‘The magic wasn’t in the stone,’ he said. ‘It was in sharing.’ And the village was never unfriendly again.
The little lesson
When everyone shares a little, there is plenty for all.
Let’s talk about it
- What did each neighbour add?
