Hugo Comes Last (and Wins)
Hugo comes last in the race, but wins something more special than a medal.
It was Sports Day, and the field was full of flags and cheering parents. Hugo lined up for the running race. His tummy fluttered. He wanted to win very much.
‘Ready, steady, GO!’ Uma zoomed ahead. Hugo ran as fast as he could. But halfway, a tiny pebble got in a shoe. Hugo wobbled and fell behind. One by one, the others crossed the finish line.
Hugo came last. His eyes began to water. But then he heard something. Everyone was clapping and shouting, ‘Come on, Hugo! You can do it!’ He wiped his eyes, and kept going.
When Hugo crossed the line, the whole field roared. Uma ran over and hugged him. ‘You never gave up,’ said Uma. ‘That’s more brave than winning.’
Tilly gave Hugo a special sticker: ‘Best Try of the Day.’ Hugo wore it all afternoon. It shone brighter than any medal.
