Chugga-chugga, chugga-chugga, choo, choo. The little night train rolled into the station. It was painted dark blue with silver stars. ‘All aboard for Dreamland!’ called the driver softly.
Kai the duck climbed aboard in his nightcap, yawning. ‘Ticket, please,’ said the driver. Kai handed over a little piece of paper. There was a seat by the window, with a soft, squashy cushion.
At Starlight Station, the train stopped. Poppy the panda hopped on, carrying a teddy. ‘May I sit here?’ asked Poppy. ‘Of course,’ whispered Kai. They shared a blanket.
Chugga-chugga, chugga-chugga. The train went over a gentle hill. It went through a tunnel of stars. Outside the window, fields of silver passed by. Otto the little bird joined them.
Chugga... Chugga... Chugga... The train slowed down. Its rhythm was soft and slow, like a heartbeat. Kai’s head rested on Poppy’s shoulder. Poppy’s head rested on Otto.
‘Next stop, Dreamland,’ whispered the driver. But the passengers were already there, fast asleep. Chugga... Chugga... Shhh.
