Kai, the Knight Who Was Scared of the Dark

Kai is a brave knight by day, but at night, the dark castle is very spooky.

Kai was the bravest knight in the kingdom. He had a shiny helmet and a wooden sword. In the daytime, he was not afraid of anything. But at night, in the dark castle, he felt a little shaky.

The shadows looked like monsters. The creaks sounded like growls. Kai pulled the blanket up to his nose. β€˜I’m a knight,’ he whispered. β€˜Knights aren’t scared.’ But he was.

Then Maya the mouse climbed onto the bed. β€˜Do you want to go for a walk?’ asked Maya. β€˜I have a little candle.’ Kai nodded. Together they tiptoed into the hall.

The monster in the corner was only a coat on a hook. The growl was the wind in the chimney. The big shadow was Kai’s own shadow, waving back. Kai began to giggle.

β€˜The dark isn’t so scary with a friend and some light,’ said Kai. Maya snuggled close. And Kai climbed back into bed, with a little candle glowing softly beside him, and fell fast asleep.
