Lena Shares the Swing
A new child arrives at the playground and nobody talks to Faye. Lena steps forward.
It was a sunny morning at the park. Children were running, jumping and laughing. But over by the fence, Faye stood alone. Faye had just moved to town and didn’t know anybody.
Lena noticed. She saw how quiet Faye was, with her hands tucked in her pockets. Lena remembered what it felt like to be new. She took a deep breath and walked over.
‘Hi,’ said Lena. ‘I’m Lena. Do you want to play building a sandcastle?’ Faye’s face lit up. ‘Yes, please!’ she said. ‘I’m Faye.’ And they ran off together.
Soon Ruby joined in too. They played building a sandcastle until the sun was high. Faye laughed so much that her tummy hurt. It was the best first day ever.
At home time, Faye turned to Lena. ‘Thank you for saying hello,’ she said. Lena smiled. ‘See you tomorrow!’ And they waved all the way down the road.
