In spring, Kira the turtle gave Omar a tiny seed. ‘It’s a carrot,’ said Kira. ‘Plant it in the soil, give it water and sun, and be patient.’ Omar dug a little hole.
Every morning, Omar ran to look. Nothing. Not even a sprout. ‘Is it broken?’ he asked Manu. ‘Plants take time,’ said Manu. Omar sighed, but watered the soil once more.
A week passed. Then two. Then, one morning, Omar saw something green poking up. A tiny shoot, no bigger than a thumb. Omar gasped. ‘It’s growing!’ Manu danced round and round.
Soon the shoot was a stem, with leaves and then a bud. Omar watered it, sang to it and shielded it from the wind. And one sunny day, the bud opened, and there was a beautiful carrot.
‘You waited so patiently,’ said Kira. Omar smiled at the carrot. ‘It was worth every day,’ he said. And he saved a seed for next spring.
