Omar’s Treasure Was a Friend

Omar digs up a chest. There’s no gold inside, just a note that says ‘look behind you’.

Omar the owl was a little pirate, and had one wish: to find treasure. He had a spade and a map. He had a hat with a feather. All he needed was a chest of gold.

Omar walked across the island, counting steps. ‘One, two, three, four,’ he said. At last he came to a big white rock. ‘X marks the spot,’ he whispered. He began to dig.

Dig, dig, dig! Clunk! There it was, a little wooden chest. Omar’s heart was pounding. He took a deep breath and lifted the lid. Inside was no gold or jewels at all. There was only a note.

The note said, ‘The real treasure is behind you.’ Omar turned around. Standing there, with a big smile and a basket of juicy mangoes, was Lily the squirrel.

‘Hello,’ said Lily. ‘I buried the chest to find a friend. I’m new on the island and didn’t know anyone. I wanted someone who loved adventure.’ Omar grinned from ear to ear.

They sat on the sand, sharing juicy mangoes and telling stories. As the sun set, Omar said, ‘You know, you’re better than gold.’ ‘You too,’ said Lily. And they sailed home together.
