Opal, the Knight Who Was Scared of the Dark

Opal is a brave knight by day, but at night, the dark castle is very spooky.

Opal was the bravest knight in the kingdom. She had a shiny helmet and a wooden sword. In the daytime, she was not afraid of anything. But at night, in the dark castle, she felt a little shaky.

The shadows looked like monsters. The creaks sounded like growls. Opal pulled the blanket up to her nose. β€˜I’m a knight,’ she whispered. β€˜Knights aren’t scared.’ But she was.

Then Layla the lamb climbed onto the bed. β€˜Do you want to go for a walk?’ asked Layla. β€˜I have a lantern.’ Opal nodded. Together they tiptoed into the hall.

The monster in the corner was only a coat on a hook. The growl was the wind in the chimney. The big shadow was Opal’s own shadow, waving back. Opal began to giggle.

β€˜The dark isn’t so scary with a friend and some light,’ said Opal. Layla snuggled close. And Opal climbed back into bed, with a lantern glowing softly beside her, and fell fast asleep.
