The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Rani the rabbit yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the waving flowers,’ whispered Rani. She stepped out into the garden in her nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Beth, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the cosy cottage,’ whispered Rani. She walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the glowing moon,’ whispered Rani. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Rani smiled back. Her eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Rani walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Beth tucked the blanket up to Rani’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Rani,’ said Beth.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Rani. She closed her eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
