Rory’s Wobbly Cake for Lena
Rory bakes a cake for Lena’s birthday. It doesn’t turn out as planned, but it tastes wonderful.
It was Lena’s birthday tomorrow, and Rory wanted to make a special surprise. He decided to bake a carrot cake. Vera the owl gave him a recipe.
Rory mixed butter, sugar, eggs and flour. He spooned the batter into a tin and popped it in the oven. Then he waited. And waited. It smelled so good!
But when Rory took out the cake, it had cracked on top. Rory’s heart sank too. ‘Oh no,’ he said. ‘It’s a mess.’ Vera smiled. ‘Let’s decorate it.’
They covered it with thick icing, sprinkles and candles. It still leaned a bit, but it looked cheerful. Rory carried it carefully to Lena’s party.
‘SURPRISE!’ Lena gasped. ‘A cake! For me?’ Rory blushed. ‘It’s not perfect,’ he said. Lena said, ‘It’s the best cake in the world, because you made it.’ Everyone sang, and ate every last crumb.
