Suki’s Wobbly Cake for Vera
Suki bakes a cake for Vera’s birthday. It doesn’t turn out as planned, but it tastes wonderful.
It was Vera’s birthday tomorrow, and Suki wanted to make a special surprise. She decided to bake a chocolate cake. Ella the elephant gave her a recipe.
Suki mixed butter, sugar, eggs and flour. She spooned the batter into a tin and popped it in the oven. Then she waited. And waited. It smelled so good!
But when Suki took out the cake, it had sank in the middle. Suki’s heart sank too. ‘Oh no,’ she said. ‘It’s a mess.’ Ella smiled. ‘Let’s decorate it.’
They covered it with thick icing, sprinkles and candles. It still leaned a bit, but it looked cheerful. Suki carried it carefully to Vera’s party.
‘SURPRISE!’ Vera gasped. ‘A cake! For me?’ Suki blushed. ‘It’s not perfect,’ she said. Vera said, ‘It’s the best cake in the world, because you made it.’ Everyone sang, and ate every last crumb.
