The Day Aisha’s Hair Stood Up
Aisha’s hair will not lie flat. Nothing works! What will happen at school photo day?
It was school photo day, and Aisha woke up to find that her hair was sticking up like a bird’s nest. There were curls. There were spikes. There was even a tuft that pointed at the ceiling.
Aisha tried to flatten it with a whole pot of jam. But the hair just got stuck to the pot, and a bee tried to land on it. ‘Oh no,’ she groaned. ‘I can’t go to school like this!’ She tried again. And again.
By the time Aisha gave up, her hair was wilder than ever. She went to school with her hood pulled right down. But at the school gate, Zara the zebra spotted her.
‘Why are you wearing your hood?’ asked Zara. Aisha sighed and pulled it down. Everyone gasped. Then Zara grinned. ‘That’s AMAZING! It looks like a lion’s mane! Can I touch it?’
Soon, a crowd gathered. Kira the koala said, ‘It looks like a firework!’ Someone else said it looked like a sunflower. Aisha began to smile. She felt a bit like a celebrity.
Photo time came. The photographer sat everyone in rows. ‘Smile!’ She flashed. And in the photo, Aisha sat in the middle with a huge grin, her hair standing up like a crown.
Everyone loved the photo. Some of the other children tried to copy Aisha’s hairstyle the next day. And Aisha learned something: sometimes the thing you think is a problem is just a different kind of wonderful.
