The Hiccupping lion
Lily has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Lily the lion woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Lily. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them made the pond splash over the grass. Another made Nina the mouse bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Lily. ‘I need to stop!’
Nina had an idea. ‘Try counting backwards from ten!’ So Lily tried. She did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at her.
Elsa the elephant had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Elsa hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Lily wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all she said.
The friends sat down, tired. Nina was so tired that she began to hum. Elsa joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Lily watched and began to giggle.
Lily laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Lily waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Elsa. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
