The Day Basil’s Hair Stood Up
Basil’s hair will not lie flat. Nothing works! What will happen at school photo day?
It was school photo day, and Basil woke up to find that his hair was sticking up like a bird’s nest. There were curls. There were spikes. There was even a tuft that pointed at the ceiling.
Basil tried to flatten it with a comb. But the hair just broke the comb in half. ‘Oh no,’ he groaned. ‘I can’t go to school like this!’ He tried again. And again.
By the time Basil gave up, his hair was wilder than ever. He went to school with his hood pulled right down. But at the school gate, Felix the fox spotted him.
‘Why are you wearing your hood?’ asked Felix. Basil sighed and pulled it down. Everyone gasped. Then Felix grinned. ‘That’s AMAZING! It looks like a lion’s mane! Can I touch it?’
Soon, a crowd gathered. Gia the giraffe said, ‘It looks like a firework!’ Someone else said it looked like a sunflower. Basil began to smile. He felt a bit like a celebrity.
Photo time came. The photographer sat everyone in rows. ‘Smile!’ He flashed. And in the photo, Basil sat in the middle with a huge grin, his hair standing up like a crown.
Everyone loved the photo. Some of the other children tried to copy Basil’s hairstyle the next day. And Basil learned something: sometimes the thing you think is a problem is just a different kind of wonderful.
