The Egg-and-Spoon Race of Rory
Rory comes last in the race, but wins something more special than a medal.
It was Sports Day, and the field was full of flags and cheering parents. Rory lined up for the sack race. His tummy fluttered. He wanted to win very much.
‘Ready, steady, GO!’ Amy zoomed ahead. Rory ran as fast as he could. But halfway, a shoelace came undone. Rory wobbled and fell behind. One by one, the others crossed the finish line.
Rory came last. His eyes began to water. But then he heard something. Everyone was clapping and shouting, ‘Come on, Rory! You can do it!’ He wiped his eyes, and kept going.
When Rory crossed the line, the whole field roared. Amy ran over and hugged him. ‘You never gave up,’ said Amy. ‘That’s more brave than winning.’
Ben gave Rory a special sticker: ‘Best Try of the Day.’ Rory wore it all afternoon. It shone brighter than any medal.
