Sports Day with Leo
Leo comes last in the race, but wins something more special than a medal.
It was Sports Day, and the field was full of flags and cheering parents. Leo lined up for the egg-and-spoon race. His tummy fluttered. He wanted to win very much.
‘Ready, steady, GO!’ Daisy zoomed ahead. Leo ran as fast as he could. But halfway, the egg rolled off. Leo wobbled and fell behind. One by one, the others crossed the finish line.
Leo came last. His eyes began to water. But then he heard something. Everyone was clapping and shouting, ‘Come on, Leo! You can do it!’ He wiped his eyes, and kept going.
When Leo crossed the line, the whole field roared. Daisy ran over and hugged him. ‘You never gave up,’ said Daisy. ‘That’s more brave than winning.’
Holly gave Leo a special sticker: ‘Best Try of the Day.’ Leo wore it all afternoon. It shone brighter than any medal.
