Toby Makes a Rainbow
Toby wonders where rainbows come from, and discovers how to make one at home.
After the rain, a rainbow arced across the sky. ‘Where do rainbows come from?’ Toby asked Theo the panda. Theo didn’t know. So Toby decided to find out.
Toby read that rainbows happen when sunlight shines through raindrops. The light bends and splits into seven colours. ‘I could do that,’ Toby thought, ‘at home!’
Toby stood in the sunlight with a garden hose. He held it up, and tilted it. Suddenly, the wall lit up with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet! ‘A rainbow!’ Toby cried.
Theo tried to catch the colours with his paws, but they slipped away. They laughed, and danced in the little rainbow until the sun slid behind a cloud.
That evening, Toby drew a picture of the rainbow in a notebook. ‘Now I know,’ he wrote. ‘Light has all the colours inside it.’ And Toby smiled, feeling like a real scientist.
