Zeke’s Night Light

Zeke is a brave knight by day, but at night, the dark castle is very spooky.

Zeke was the bravest knight in the kingdom. He had a shiny helmet and a wooden sword. In the daytime, he was not afraid of anything. But at night, in the dark castle, he felt a little shaky.

The shadows looked like monsters. The creaks sounded like growls. Zeke pulled the blanket up to his nose. ‘I’m a knight,’ he whispered. ‘Knights aren’t scared.’ But he was.

Then Olive the hedgehog climbed onto the bed. ‘Do you want to go for a walk?’ asked Olive. ‘I have a lantern.’ Zeke nodded. Together they tiptoed into the hall.

The monster in the corner was only a coat on a hook. The growl was the wind in the chimney. The big shadow was Zeke’s own shadow, waving back. Zeke began to giggle.

‘The dark isn’t so scary with a friend and some light,’ said Zeke. Olive snuggled close. And Zeke climbed back into bed, with a lantern glowing softly beside him, and fell fast asleep.
