It was bedtime in the forest, but Rani the bear wasn’t sleepy. She skipped. She hopped. She bounced on the bed. ‘I’m not tired!’ she cried.
Sam the squirrel wasn’t tired either. Sam was dancing in the moonlight. And Enzo the elephant couldn’t sleep with so much noise. ‘Oh dear,’ sighed Enzo.
Up in the sky, the moon heard them. She was big and round and kind, and she knew just what to do. Very softly, she began to hum.
‘hush, little one, hush,’ hummed the moon. Her song floated down on silver beams. It tickled the treetops and whispered through the leaves. Everyone stopped to listen.
Sam stopped dancing. Sam sat down and yawned. Enzo wrapped his blanket round himself. And Rani rubbed her eyes. ‘Maybe a tiny bit tired,’ she said.
The moon sang on and on, softer and softer. One by one, the animals curled up. One snore, two snores, three. And the moon smiled and sang a little longer, just to be sure.
