Boo! It’s Only Hugo
Hugo and friends dare each other to look inside the spooky house. What they find is a surprise.
At the end of the street stood a tall, dark house with creaky shutters and a crooked door. Everyone said it was haunted. One windy evening, Idris dared Hugo to knock.
Hugo gulped, but nodded. They crept up the path, step by step. The gate squeaked. A shutter banged. Something moved behind the curtain. They held hands tightly.
Hugo knocked. The door creaked slowly open. A tall shadow appeared. ‘Hello?’ it said. They screamed! But it was only Oscar the owl, holding a plate of carrot cake.
‘Don’t be frightened,’ said Oscar. ‘Come in, come in.’ Inside it was warm and bright. They met a retired magician with a rabbit. ‘We thought you were a ghost!’ laughed Idris. ‘I get that a lot,’ said Oscar.
They stayed for hours, eating carrot cake and hearing stories. When they left, Hugo said, ‘Thank you for having us.’ ‘Come back anytime,’ said Oscar. And the house never seemed spooky again.
