Dylan and the Magic Stone Soup
Dylan makes soup from a stone, and the whole village adds one thing at a time.
Dylan the duck arrived in a village on a cold evening, very hungry. The people shut their doors. βWe have nothing to spare,β they said. Dylan sat in the square, thinking.
Then Dylan lit a fire and filled a big pot with water. He dropped in a smooth round stone. βIβm making stone soup,β he announced. βItβs magic. It only needs a little something extra.β
Jamal the cow peeked out. βStone soup?β he said. βI have some onions.β Into the pot they went. Then Dexter the bear brought herbs. Idris the elephant brought a bag of rice.
The soup bubbled and smelled wonderful. Soon the whole village gathered round with bowls and spoons. Everyone shared, and there was plenty for all.
βBest soup I ever had,β said Idris. Dylan smiled and fished out the stone. βThe magic wasnβt in the stone,β he said. βIt was in sharing.β And the village was never unfriendly again.
The little lesson
When everyone shares a little, there is plenty for all.
Letβs talk about it
- What did each neighbour add?
- Is there really magic in the stone?
