Elsa and the Hiccups
Elsa has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Elsa the elephant woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Elsa. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them knocked over a tower of jam jars. Another made Flo the frog bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Elsa. ‘I need to stop!’
Flo had an idea. ‘Try holding your breath!’ So Elsa tried. She did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at her.
Mia the mouse had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Mia hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Elsa wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all she said.
The friends sat down, tired. Flo was so tired that she began to hum. Mia joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Elsa watched and began to giggle.
Elsa laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Elsa waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Mia. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
