Enzo Comes Last (and Wins)
Enzo comes last in the race, but wins something more special than a medal.
It was Sports Day, and the field was full of flags and cheering parents. Enzo lined up for the egg-and-spoon race. His tummy fluttered. He wanted to win very much.
‘Ready, steady, GO!’ Wren zoomed ahead. Enzo ran as fast as he could. But halfway, the egg rolled off. Enzo wobbled and fell behind. One by one, the others crossed the finish line.
Enzo came last. His eyes began to water. But then he heard something. Everyone was clapping and shouting, ‘Come on, Enzo! You can do it!’ He wiped his eyes, and kept going.
When Enzo crossed the line, the whole field roared. Wren ran over and hugged him. ‘You never gave up,’ said Wren. ‘That’s more brave than winning.’
Tomas gave Enzo a special sticker: ‘Best Try of the Day.’ Enzo wore it all afternoon. It shone brighter than any medal.
