Layla’s Class Pet That Escaped
Layla is in charge of the class pet for the weekend, but it goes missing.
On Friday, Tariq the turtle said, ‘This weekend, Layla will take Wren the piglet home.’ Layla was thrilled. She carried the cage home like treasure.
On Saturday morning, Layla went to feed Wren. The cage door was open! The cage was empty! Layla’s heart fell. She had forgotten to latch it properly. Wren was missing!
Layla searched everywhere. She looked under the bed. She looked in the bath. Nothing. She wanted to hide the mistake. But Layla knew that wouldn’t help Wren. She called Kofi.
‘I lost Wren,’ Layla said. Kofi said, ‘Don’t panic. Let’s look together.’ They tiptoed through the house, whispering. And at last, they heard a tiny rustle in the laundry basket.
There was Wren, safe and sound, looking sleepy. Layla scooped Wren up gently, and checked the latch three times. On Monday, Layla told Tariq what had happened. ‘Thank you for being honest,’ said Tariq.
‘We all make mistakes,’ said Tariq. ‘Layla fixed it, and that’s what counts.’ And from then on, Layla was the most careful pet-minder in the class.
