Nell Welcomes Mabel
A new child arrives at the playground and nobody talks to Mabel. Nell steps forward.
It was a sunny morning at the park. Children were running, jumping and laughing. But over by the fence, Mabel stood alone. Mabel had just moved to town and didn’t know anybody.
Nell noticed. She saw how quiet Mabel was, with her hands tucked in her pockets. Nell remembered what it felt like to be new. She took a deep breath and walked over.
‘Hi,’ said Nell. ‘I’m Nell. Do you want to play building a sandcastle?’ Mabel’s face lit up. ‘Yes, please!’ she said. ‘I’m Mabel.’ And they ran off together.
Soon Ravi joined in too. They played building a sandcastle until the sun was high. Mabel laughed so much that her tummy hurt. It was the best first day ever.
At home time, Mabel turned to Nell. ‘Thank you for saying hello,’ she said. Nell smiled. ‘See you tomorrow!’ And they waved all the way down the road.
