Nina Welcomes Tessa

A new child arrives at the playground and nobody talks to Tessa. Nina steps forward.

It was a sunny morning at the park. Children were running, jumping and laughing. But over by the fence, Tessa stood alone. Tessa had just moved to town and didn’t know anybody.

Nina noticed. She saw how quiet Tessa was, with her hands tucked in her pockets. Nina remembered what it felt like to be new. She took a deep breath and walked over.

‘Hi,’ said Nina. ‘I’m Nina. Do you want to play hopscotch?’ Tessa’s face lit up. ‘Yes, please!’ she said. ‘I’m Tessa.’ And they ran off together.

Soon Percy joined in too. They played hopscotch until the sun was high. Tessa laughed so much that her tummy hurt. It was the best first day ever.

At home time, Tessa turned to Nina. ‘Thank you for saying hello,’ she said. Nina smiled. ‘See you tomorrow!’ And they waved all the way down the road.
