Opal Looks After the Class Pet
Opal is in charge of the class pet for the weekend, but it goes missing.
On Friday, Ella the elephant said, ‘This weekend, Opal will take Freddie the mouse home.’ Opal was thrilled. She carried the cage home like treasure.
On Saturday morning, Opal went to feed Freddie. The cage door was open! The cage was empty! Opal’s heart fell. She had forgotten to latch it properly. Freddie was missing!
Opal searched everywhere. She looked under the bed. She looked in the bath. Nothing. She wanted to hide the mistake. But Opal knew that wouldn’t help Freddie. She called Ravi.
‘I lost Freddie,’ Opal said. Ravi said, ‘Don’t panic. Let’s look together.’ They tiptoed through the house, whispering. And at last, they heard a tiny rustle inside a slipper.
There was Freddie, safe and sound, looking sleepy. Opal scooped Freddie up gently, and checked the latch three times. On Monday, Opal told Ella what had happened. ‘Thank you for being honest,’ said Ella.
‘We all make mistakes,’ said Ella. ‘Opal fixed it, and that’s what counts.’ And from then on, Opal was the most careful pet-minder in the class.
