Percy Says Hello
Percy is so shy that he hides from everyone, until a friend needs help.
Percy the squirrel was very, very shy. When anyone said hello, Percy hid behind a mushroom. ‘Maybe they won’t notice me,’ he whispered.
One windy day, Mabel the elephant came by. Mabel was sniffling. ‘I’ve lost my red kite,’ said Mabel. ‘It blew away, and I can’t find it anywhere.’
Percy peeked out. He wanted to help, but his voice felt tiny. ‘I... I... ‘ he began. But the words were too small to hear.
Then Percy saw something shiny high up on a branch. It was the red kite! Percy was small and quick, so he climbed up, up, up, and gently plucked it down.
Percy tiptoed over to Mabel and held out the red kite. ‘Oh!’ said Mabel. ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you!’ Mabel gave Percy the biggest hug.
‘Would you like to be friends?’ asked Mabel. Percy took a tiny breath. ‘Yes,’ he said. It was the loudest yes he had ever said.
